Things to do on Anna Maria Island

Kayak story on Anna Maria Island

For the last 2 days we rented kayaks to people who kayaked their way through Bimini Bay.  They started at the 62nd street boat ramp and kayaked in the bay because of the shelter it provides from the wind.  Both groups said they had a school of dolphins playing with them for 20 minutes.  They said the dolphins were curious and playful.  These guests were thrilled that they could get so close to dolphins in the weird and they  will have these special memories to bring home of their vacation on Anna Maria Island. 

Bimini Bay is about in the middle of the Anna Maria Island and is a huge shallow bay that many of the Island's canals open up to.  If one is looking to enter to it for kayaking, one could get to it from the north tip of the Island off of South Bay road or enter from the boat ramp on 62nd street.  Another way to get to Bimini Bay is through the mouth of the bay from the water side.  If one launched their kayaks at the city pier beach or the bbayside park they would kayak south then turn into the bay.  Once in the bay there are so many great things to do and see.  Get close to some multi million dollar yachts at Galati Yachts or go for lunch at Rotten Ralphs.

"Save Anna Maria" is a non-profit organization.

Our Mission  is to serve & preserve the unique Character of Anna Maria Island

Just nominated as the president of Save Anna Maria Island (SAM), Katie Pierola is no stranger to Anna Maria Island. She has lived in Bradenton Beach for 30 years and served as Mayor for three terms.

Pierola said, "when the local Metropolitan Planning Organization started in 1972 the cities that were represented included Bradenton, Palmetto, Longboat Key, Sarasota, Venice, North Port and the counties of Sarasota and Manatee."

"The cities of Anna Maria, Bradenton Beach, and Holmes Beach did not have representation."

“There were really big problems with bad communication with the islands. We are trying to move forward and that’s why we’ve now got our Web site located at www.amisam.org.” 

The new web site for SAM was launched to improve communications with the community and to inform people about how this magnificent island, spanning seven miles long and two blocks wide, can be saved and served going into the future.
